I can see our new house from next door

So we’ve closed on our house and are in the process of acquiring the multitudes of “house stuff” that we need. Since we didn’t use all of our downpayment money for the downpayment, we have a little bit of wiggle room. Instead of getting sparkly new countertops (we’ll do that in the summer with our work bonuses) we opted for brand spanking new appliances! Stainless. Fancy. Brett’s going to be doing a LOT of cooking with our new doo dads. And hey look! Our new stove comes with both a chicken nugget AND a pizza button. Neat. (guffaw)

We’re also going to do a little painting, some storm door installs, more attic insulation and some house weatherizing. For the attic insulation and the weatherization we’ll get a bit back from the city energy company to help compensate for the cost. Plus, our utility bills shouldn’t be quite as high as they normally would. Which is good… have you lived in Texas in the summer? Yeah.

We bought this cute buffet hutch thing from Modern Salvage here in Austin, and we think it will be just DARLING in our open kitchen/dining area. I want to put our vintage mugs, antique percolator and other fun kitcheny items in the top glass shelf area. I’ve been on the search for the perfect, affordable vintage dining table but so far have come up empty. In lieu of vintage we may purchase one these expensive (I’m kinda cheap, okay!?) Industrial Dining Tables from West Elm, though I wanted this angled leg table because it was expandable AND cheaper. But now it’s discontinued. BOOO.

True to my crafty inclinations, I’m also slowly working on a larger-scale embroidery of the front of our house. I wanted to commemorate our first house purchase! I’m excited to get it finished, though I’m in the very beginning stages of making it. I can’t wait to hang it up on the wall of the very first house we have ever owned!

French Paper Pop Ink Awesomeness

French Paper is a family run paper mill, and I’ve been a fan of their high quality color-saturated products for quite a while now. Their color selection is divine, and they even have sparkly papers, animal free papers, super heavy papers and rad patterned papers. I’ve also used their fabulous collection of free vector images for various paper products in the past.

Their online shop boasts some to-die-for graphic products like plates, wrapping paper and fun decor-a-boards (all of which I’ve salivated over at one time or another). And I totally forgot about this until Danielle mentioned it, but they also have some of their boldest designs available as posters! Huzzah!

LOVELY! There are many more designs so hop on over to the shop and take a look. I’m hoping I get something fun and bright for the holidays this year!

Arrows as decor

I keep noticing arrows… vintage ones, crafted ones, arrows as decor. Apparently they’re a design trend! And why not? They’re small and colorful, a little funky and easy to hang or place around the home. They even make great kiddo room decor. Even Nicole, over at Making It Lovely, has added them to her husband’s office and I think it’s a “lovely” addition!

Works in Progress: totes, embroidery and pendants

Whew! I have a lot going on ladies and gents. For starters, I joined a Swap-Bot.com swap and will be sending off my bunting garland to the lucky recipient on Monday. I’e really enjoyed my swaps in the past… a mixtape, a vintage thrift store find, a self-portrait swap. I nabbed this bunting garland swap because I just LURV making them. My tutorials have been featured on OffbeatBride.com and I even have a couple in my Etsy shop for sale. (more…)

A Place to Hang Your Hat

I’ve been on the lookout for a sturdy, quirky coat rack for a while. I prefer a stand-alone but the options are really limited… they’re either pioneer/woodsy looking or too contemporary/shabby chic. BUT! I have found some rad wall-mounted coat/hat racks. Some are pricey but they’re all beeeyoutiful!

My bunting hanging in Tavi's room-closet

I made my first ever bunting garland for Ariel, when I heard she was pregnant with little Tavi. I think they add such a fun punch of color to a room, and I’m glad to hear that she luuurvs it. Here it is, featured in an OffbeatMama.com post about Ariel’s baby closet!

I did a DIY tutorial post on how to make this exact style of bunting over at OffbeatBride.com. It’s super fab!

My future home

Ughh… I so want a house. I’m tired of renting, but since we don’t plan on living in Seattle forever, that dream is put on hold til we can move closer to family (well, and so we can actually save money to GET a house). I’m tired of waiting though… and I can already tell what will dominate my creative energy when we get to that much-lauded and anticipated point.

Thriftin'

I used to thrift shop a lot. Back in college, where there were more thrift stores in my town than department stores, it was easy, cost-effective and stylish to dress in thrift store goods. These days I’m less into vintage t-shirts and more into the amazing kitsch you can find in those dusty palaces of discarded goods (one man’s trash!).

With the re-opening of my Etsy shop, my eye has been keen for cutesy little pieces in good condition that I can list for resale. It’s hard not to keep them all! Especially this adorable pomegranate wall hanging. And I hate to break it to ya, but I’m keeping this sweet vintage plate AND this pheasant wall art. They’re just too good to let go of.

Lo & Behold on Etsy

Good news guys… I have officially re-opened my Etsy shop! I began the shop as an experiment, testing the waters of Etsy and trying to find my scope and direction. As I’ve been sewing and crafting more and more my focus has changed from custom vinyl graphics to vintage and thrifty finds and handmade home goods.

DIY Needlework Kits

One of my new favorite crafty-like things I like to do to occupy my idle time (as if I had any!) is needlework, specifically embroidery. I’m still very much a beginner. My needlework is sketchy to say the least, but it’s oh so rewarding. Nothing makes me happier (well, maybe a few things do) than toiling away at a piece of embroidery and then finishing it! Voila! It becomes an awesome, handmade piece of artistry that I spent hours on! It’s very satisfying.

Blog Find: Switch Entry Caddy

Switch Entry Caddy

What an ingenious little idea! I found this smart little number on Apartment Therapy, and if I wasn’t such a klutz about knocking things over (or had a measly few pieces of mail to look through) this would be a fab option for our household! It’s powder-coated aluminum, so I’m guessing it wouldn’t tear up easily. And installation is as easy as one-two-screw.

Our mail intake is a little too bulky for this slim and trim version. But perhaps the power shelf would be more useful? Aesthetically, not so pleasing but EVER so useful!

Proof of my handmade pledge

1st bunting project

This holiday season I made the handmade pledge. And while I didn’t make EVERYTHING (except for gifts to the hubs!) I made a valiant effort. I made potholders, partridge ornaments, an apron, bunting and a felt eyeglasses case among other things.

potholder and ornament

I stuck my fingers repeatedly with an embroidery needle, tangled the bobbin thread on my machine about every other time I set to sewing, glued my fingers together accidentally…. suffice it to say I had many crafting injuries.

And my holiday crafting stressed me the heck out! I was freaking about if I was going to get everything done, if people were going to be let down that they didn’t get a fancy new-fangled mall gift etc. My neurosis know no bounds!

Christmas gift goodies galore!

I was unsure how this Christmas would fare, it being just the hubby, dogs and I at home on glorious Christmas morning. In retrospect, I shouldn’t have thought twice about it. Brett, that ever-thoughtful husband of mine, did whatever he could to guarantee we would have a good Christmas together. Not only did he make me Ghirardelli hot cocoa with mini marshmallows, but he also got both dogs HUGE honkin’ Christmas bones AND……. (drumroll)….

my new machine!

Urban Craft Uprising and new friends

I attended my first Urban Craft Uprising in Seattle this weekend! My friend Kiki and I went towards the last half of the second day on Sunday. I had fears that everything would be sold out and the fair would be a ghost town, but the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall was actually teeming with people. We saw many great vendors, bought some gifts for others and a few little ones for ourselves (button rings via Greenbelts!).

shower art by Ugly Baby

I stopped by longtime favorite Rosalie Gale’s shower art Ugly Baby booth and was tempted to buy one of her pieces again, but resisted! They’re great for gifts, and we even kept one for ourselves which says “Love handles are soft and sexy”. It’s positive affirmation in the morning, let me tell ya.

I was also able to meet and hang out with Bread and Badger lovelies Amanda and Sean. Their etched glass pint glasses, stemware and other doodads are just swell and make great holiday gifts. I’ve personally bought a couple of items from them and they are top notch. They love beer, good home-cooked food and rad company so we got along fabulously!

Cheap-o Neat-o Gift Guide

This year our gift-giving grand total will be much lower than last year’s. And from what I’ve seen and heard, that’s the norm this holiday season. People just aren’t spending as much, and they’re looking for unique and handmade gifts as opposed to over-priced store-bought items that hundreds of people ALSO bought for their loved ones. Ack!

So here’s my ode to you budget-friendly, handmade shoppers in need of some refreshing, and perhaps quirky, gifts for the loved ones. I wouldn’t turn away ANY of these fine items. Would you?

cutting board by Fine Little Shop - $32

These kitchen cutting boards are so decorative that I’m not sure I’d want to cut things on them! Hang them in the kitchen perhaps? I love the quirky cross-stitch-style design. Other fancy designy cutting boards can be found in Fine Little Shop’s Big Cartel shop.

Headphones Hand-printed Letterpress Poster by Roll and Tumble Press - $20

I’ve bought a couple of prints from Roll and Tumble Press and they are vibrant, good quality prints. Their letterpress prints are all handmade, and they have a variety of snarky and downright cute designs to fit anyone’s personality. I especially love this Read Between The Lines print and this Living In Sin sampler (we lived in sign for a LONG time!). Couple this with a vintage frame, or a clipboard to hang it from on the wall and you’ve got yourself an inexpensive, awesome art gift!

Holiday Crafting: the madness begins

wreathI’m just overwhelmed with all the rad holiday crafts I’m finding online! Yesterday I tweeted about wanting to make this simple, but probably time-consuming, wreath. I think it’s an excellent way to use up extra paper scraps and wouldn’t necessarily have to be all one color scheme, but I think that’s the wily crafter in me. It might look *better* if the colors/patterns of paper followed some sort of color theme.

Insatiable Urge to Craft

When the fall weather kicks up in Seattle, there is a little switch that clicks inside of me: CRAFT TIME. I don’t know what it is about the rainy NW weather that makes my hands antsy to craft. Maybe it’s the homebound-ness of it all, the cozy warm house with the cozy warm pets.

This past weekend I decided to practice a little more embroidery. With the help of Sublime Stitching’s awesome Tattoo Your Towels embroidery kit I stitched up a pretty darn cute design on an old green pillowcase I had. Silly me, I ALSO accidentally imprinted the “Test Me” piece of the kit on the pillowcase and it will not wash out! Oh well, it was just for our use anyway.

Again, last night I found myself needing to hold something in my hands and do something productive. There were no half-done projects to finish, and being exhausted from the work day, a new project sounded daunting.
