New curtains and pretty plants

I’ve been meaning to make new curtains for our large front window for some time. The sheer ones that were there previously had been left by the people we bought the house from and just weren’t our style. And of course, I cannot allow myself to ever buy curtains because A) they’re usually not that cute and B) I can make them, so why wouldn’t I?

Well, our little pitty Iris made the decision for me last week. We came home to one of the curtains hanging in shreds. She had grabbed a corner of the curtain and shredded it… while still in her dog crate. She’s an industrious one. So I hoofed it to my fave local fabric store, Stitchlab, and nabbed some slightly mid-century style geometric fabric for the curtains. It literally took me one whole Sunday to make those damn things. Working with 11 yards of fabric that needs to be cut, ironed, pinned and sewn is no easy task. Pardon the iPhone photo… but aren’t they cute?!

During that uber-productive weekend we also repotted some plants and got a few new ones. Hoping they all survive. Our crazy big tomato plants aren’t looking so good :(…

Musings and goings-on

I’m moving. Again. After packing up all our belongings and four pets to drive from Seattle to Austin for the Big Texas Move-back, and staying for less than a year, we’re moving again. But this time, within the same city!

We’re shopping right now for houses so we’re FINALLY GOING TO BUY A HOUSE. I’m beyond excited for this new part of our lives, and a little reticent. I feel like Brett and I have both been looking, planning and yearning for a place to call our own for quite a while now. While this decision comes at a somewhat tumultuous time in our lives (big life decisions and such), it’s a welcome turn of events.

Just thinking about the funky changes we’ll make to our new place, carving out a little piece of “us” there, makes me giddy. Mid-century modern doors? YES. Retro light fixtures… uhh yeah. Painting things wacky colors!? Totally.

I’m perpetually inspired by Danielle Thompson’s home. Eeh gads. Is it not rad around every corner?!

I have a feeling you’re gonna be hearing a lot of designy/remodel talk in the nearish future. Big plans are a’coming folks! I like this life. It’s growing on me.

Shop / Life Update

hubs and I at Kerry Park

A couple of weekends ago mi madre came to visit, all the way from Texas! Luckily the weather in Seattle wasn’t grim and gray as per the usual March days… it was beeautiful. We went to Kerry Park, which boasts the best skyline/view in Seattle, did some estate sale thrifting, took a daytrip to Poulsbo and got her a lil wine crunk at a wine bar in our neighborhood! It was a blast.

My future home

Ughh… I so want a house. I’m tired of renting, but since we don’t plan on living in Seattle forever, that dream is put on hold til we can move closer to family (well, and so we can actually save money to GET a house). I’m tired of waiting though… and I can already tell what will dominate my creative energy when we get to that much-lauded and anticipated point.

Quest for Organization

Organization often eludes even the most put-together and efficient. As I get older the need to be more organized is very apparent… I mean I actually surf the internet for tools to help me stay organized and in-check!

One of the trouble areas in our home is the entryway. The hubs likes to throw everything down wherever, and after some cajoling, we created a quasi-entry way area for his and my things. We situated an old JC Penney TV with a bowling pin lamp and record bowl on top and orange vintage shell chair in an area near our door. The record bowl serves as a key receptacle (so the TV doesn’t get anymore scratched up) and the lamp is a welcome beacon at night. We eventually hope to add an old wood coat rack and some vintage metal hooks to the mix.

While our system is working pretty good, I can’t help but pine for this dandy little organizational number. It would be great for a small apartment or condo, or a more modern abode. Not only can you write on the front, but you can deposit mail and hang your keys as well! Now only if it came with a sturdy purse hook…

New Beginnings, A New Neighborhood

My blogging has dropped off for a couple of reasons. I shut down my Etsy shop temporarily to concentrate on moving, and since this blog is directly related to the content of my Etsy shop it made sense to put a temporary kabosh on it.

And we moved, from the beautiful small suburban town of Issaquah to the bustling neighborhood of Columbia City, oft-referred to as the “ghetto” of Seattle. This supposed ghetto has a strong sense of community, a dog park within a 1/2 mile, a small little bar/restaurant strip, has kick-ass Ethiopian, Vietnamese and Mexican taco truck establishments and is a mere bus ride away from downtown.

Take that, Issaquah!

So my new ghetto = the most exciting and fun neighborhood I’ve ever lived in. Just when I get sick of the boxes and seemingly unfinished nature of our new house, I sneak a glance at things that make me happy. Things that are a sign to me that our style is finally emerging, our sense of home is finally settling.

Here are a few superb furniture finds we snagged off Craigslist.

The Lorna House

I’ve always considered myself a 30s bungalow kind of girl, craving a  sweet front porch, built in bookshelves and fat crown moldings, and to a certain extent I am. But as my tastes have changed I find myself veering towards the more modern mid-century design, a style that I believe melds warmness and comfort with modern and clean design.
